Aftercare

Tips and Instructions for Healing and Preserving Your New Tattoo

Initial Cleaning (First 24 Hours)

Leave the Bandage On: After finishing the tattoo, I’ll apply a bandage. Keep it on for 4-5 hours (or as recommended), allowing the skin to start healing.

First Wash: Once the time is up, wash your hands, gently remove the bandage, and wash the tattoo with lukewarm water and a mild, fragrance-free anti-bacterial soap. Avoid hot water, which can irritate your skin.

Dry the Area: Gently pat the tattoo dry with a clean paper towel or allow it to air dry. Avoid rubbing, which can cause irritation.

First Week of Healing (Days 1-7)

Moisturize: After cleaning, apply a thin layer of a fragrance-free, non-petroleum-based tattoo balm or lotion (like Aquaphor, Lubriderm, or a tattoo-specific product). Apply a small amount so the tattoo isn’t too greasy.

Repeat Cleaning and Moisturizing: Wash and moisturize your tattoo 2-3 times daily. Keep it clean and avoid letting it dry out.

Avoid Products to Skip: Don’t use petroleum-based products (e.g., Vaseline), which can suffocate the skin, or heavily scented lotions that might cause irritation.

Second Week (Days 7-14)

Peeling and Itching: It’s normal for your tattoo to peel or flake. Don’t pick at the flakes or scratch it, as this can damage the design. If it’s itchy, gently tap it or apply a thin layer of lotion.

Limit Moisturizing: Apply lotion only as needed if the tattoo feels dry or tight.

Long-Term Care

Keep It Moisturized: Even after healing, keep your tattoo moisturized to maintain its vibrancy.

Protect It from the Sun: Sun exposure can fade tattoos, so use sunscreen whenever your tattoo will be exposed.

General Aftercare Tips (First 1-4 Weeks)

  • Avoid Submerging the Tattoo: Don’t swim, soak in baths/hot tubs, or use saunas for at least 3-4 weeks. Showers are fine, but keep the tattoo out of direct water pressure.
  • Stay Out of the Sun: Avoid direct sunlight and tanning beds for at least a month. UV exposure can fade the tattoo. After it’s healed, always use sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) on your tattoo to protect the ink.
  • Wear Loose Clothing: Tight clothes can rub against the tattoo and cause irritation. Opt for loose, soft fabrics that won’t irritate the skin.
  • Avoid Exercise: For the first 48 hours, it’s best to avoid excess sweating, which could irritate the skin or cause the ink to push out. If you do exercise, wash the tattoo area with anti-bacterial soap soon after and apply a new layer of moisturizer.
